Brief Chronology of Mining Developments

1855 - - The first shaft on the property was sunk to a depth of 160 ft by the Kimberton Coal Company
1864 - - A shaft was sunk by the Wilkes-Barre Coal and Iron Company to a depth of 315 ft; it is not known if this was a new shaft or a deepening of the original one
1866 - - A tunnel 1000 ft long was driven at water level to the Red Ash seam; this seems to be the opening referred to as the 'Red Ash Tunnel' in the 1872 Mine Inspector's Report
1867 - - While precise information is lacking, the first shipments from the new breaker are believed to have been made in the period 1866-7
1870 - - The 1870 Industrial Census reported that the Sugar Notch had three openings and engines totalling 140 horsepower
1905 - - The breaker burned down at a loss of $60,000; its daily capacity at that time was 1400 cars
